Furniture is an essential part of daily living. This is true for both indoor and outdoor furniture. It gives our homes charm and personality. Outdoor furniture in particular is often overlooked, however. This is a shame, because it actually adds a significant amount of value to your overall quality of life. Thanks to this type of furniture, you can comfortably enjoy nature and being outside, and this has a number of significant health benefits. Thankfully, this is now becoming more well-known and you have a variety of furniture pieces available to you, made from different materials.

Choosing Outdoor Furniture:

When you choose your outdoor furniture, you first have to consider the material that you like. An element of this is your personal preference, but you also have to consider your climate. Wicker furniture may be very beautiful, for instance, but it is not suitable for wet and cold climates. Hence, unless you have covers or storage, this may not be suitable for you.

You should also think about style. A lot of people like wood furniture, with certain types of wood like white oak, eucalyptus, cypress, balau, teak, and redwood being particularly suitable for the outdoor environment. They are quite resistant to different weather extremes. As stated, your particular climate will be a driving factor in terms of determining which outdoor furniture is and isn’t suitable to your particular environment.

If you live in an area with good weather, then you can consider wicker furnitute. Rattan vine is particularly suitable as it offers an exotic look for tables and chairs. This material is comfortable, lightweight, free from splinters, and distinctive in look. Synthetic wicker also exists, so if you have your heart set on this material but live in the wrong climate, there are other options for you.

Should you prefer the look of metal furniture, aluminum is usually the best option. This is because it has a truly unique look, while also being lightweight. Usually, it is constructed using hollow tubes, which are incredibly durable. There is also cast or wrought iron, which has a more vintage look to it. This is a lot heavier, however. Whichever metal you choose, it should be rust-free and durable, while also being resistant to all types of weather. Metal furniture is also very easy to maintain.

Your final option is plastic furniture, which is being popularized as of late. Vinyl is proving to be particularly interesting, because it can be made in so many different designs. If you want a table with a top that looks like the night’s sky, surrounded by yellow seats with purple swirls, it can all be done. The added benefit of plastic is that it is far more affordable.

Buying Outdoor Furniture:

A key consideration for most of us is budget. While it may be tempting to simply pick the cheapest option out there, this is not necessarily the best idea. Cheap furniture often isn’t very durable, which means you will have to replace it often, at considerable expense. Remember, as well, that you don’t need a lot of outdoor furniture. Hence, it is okay to spend a little bit more on the few things that you definitely want to have in your outdoor space.

Maintenance of Outdoor Furniture:

You have to take maintenance into consideration as well. Aluminum and wood are generally the easiest to maintain. It often only needs a quick rub down or some varnish for it to look beautiful again. Metal furniture may require the occasional coating of rust-free paint. Plastic needs regular cleaning. You may find that plastic furniture deteriorates the quickest. This is because the material isn’t as durable, and it is also affected by sunlight, meaning it will quickly discolor.

Thinking Out of the Box:

If you are in the market for outdoor furniture, you may want to consider thinking out of the box. Do you really want to have those standard plastic tables and lawn chairs that the past generation had? We have so much technology available to us, and so many different materials, that we can all create things that are truly unique.

To pick something that is right for you, you need to think not just of your climate and the material, as explained above, but also about how you will use the furniture. Do you need something that allows you to entertain, to lounge around the pool, to enable the children to play, to have some quiet space for yourself? There are many different reasons to have furniture, and you need different items of each of those options.

If you want to entertain, then you need furniture that stands out and that enables people to mingle. Standing tables and corner couches are particularly popular for this. They enable people to walk around during a party, rest their feet when they want to, and not feel confined to a singular space.

If you have a pool, then you will probably want a few deck loungers to allow people to be comfortable. You may also want a few chairs for those who don’t want to lie down the whole time, and you need some tables. Tables with cup holders are particularly popular, because these will prevent things from falling, spilling, and breaking.

If you want something relaxing and just for you, then you may want to consider something like a floating egg chair, or a hammock, to name but two options. Those types of pieces cocoon you, sheltering you from the outside world. Make sure you have plenty of foliage around you as well, so you can really feel at one with nature.

Last but not least, if you have children, aluminum pieces really are the way forward. They are lightweight enough to move around so you can keep an eye on your children, but also durable enough to withstand the high levels of activity that children have. You may also want to consider a picnic table, perhaps one of adult size and one of child size. The possibilities truly are endless and you are limited only by your own imagination.
